Letter from the Principal

Principal's Message (April/May)

Greetings Venture School Families!

As the seasons change and the weather gets warmer, I am reminded of a comment from a former colleague who used to say “Spring has Sprung!”  With Spring Break now behind us, the next nine weeks and the “homestretch” of the school year is always a busy time around Venture School as we prepare for graduation.

The Venture School staff are currently reviewing our school-wide Expected Student Learning Outcomes as part of the WASC accreditation process.  What is WASC? Every six years, public alternative and comprehensive schools in California take part in the WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) self-study whereby we examine our practices and demonstrate the capacity, commitment, and competence to support high-quality student learning and ongoing school improvement. Over the next 12 months, we will be looking at our instructional practices and program changes since the last WASC visits (2011 & 2014) to identify areas of strength and growth. We will be asking for your assistance as we survey our families for your thoughts and ideas for Venture School both now and into the future!

As always, we value every student’s opportunity to learn and every teacher’s opportunity to teach so that everyone can reach their maximum potential. To that end, the Venture teachers are closely monitoring each student’s 2nd Semester course progress. It is also important, over the next nine weeks, that students and families stay in contact to also monitor course completion. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your Venture teacher for information.

We have some important announcements for the next two months to pass on, please see the information below.

In Partnership,

Matt Chamberlain

Principal

September / October 2015

Greetings Venture School Families!

Welcome to the 2015 – 2016 school year!!!  Venture School is a unique setting that strives on educating students through independent study, one on one instruction, small group, and online blended learning.  Venture is a hub of learning where students are given opportunities to accomplish their academic goals through creative, project-based, experiential learning that is tailored to each student’s learning style, interests, and passions. To that end, we are excited to roll out our redesigned English and Science curriculum to further our Common Core and NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) instruction through a blended learning approach. Over the course of the year, we will continue to implement new and innovative programs through blended learning, flipped classroom lessons (lessons that are viewed at home or in a computer lab and then expand upon the learning with their teacher), technology workshops, and the use of relevant technology that will prepare students for 21st Century College and Career pathways.

Throughout the school year, the Venture staff will also be infusing character education, digital citizenship, and school-wide project based learning opportunities to introduce and reinforce the importance of community involvement, volunteering, and giving back to the community.

Looking forward, one of the most vital components of a successful learning experience is the parental involvement and commitment towards making your student’s education at Venture the most it can be.  We have many opportunities for parents to help our school site and we ask you to consider helping out in as many ways as possible:

  • MAKING A SCHOOL DONATION - Venture School is asking parents for a voluntary donation (suggested donation is $200) to support Venture’s small group instruction in Math, Science, English and Art, technology supplies, as well as the duplication of student course packets. 100% of your donation will be given to Venture School to directly benefit our students.

  • CORPORATE MATCHING GIFT DONATION - Venture School would also gladly accept corporate matching donations based upon your voluntary donation, whereby 100% of your donation will be given to Venture School to directly benefit our students.

  • RUN FOR EDUCATION – Register for the SRVEF Run for Education!!!  Whether you run, walk, or just register to get the t-shirt, this is an easy way to support Venture School. Go to: http://www.srvef.org/the-run and list Venture as your school!!!

  • TINY TICKETS – Do you, your family, friends, colleagues, or coworkers ride BART?  If so, this is an easy way to give back to Venture!!!  Bring your used BART tickets with low value ($0.05 - $1.00) to Venture School and we can redeem them to support the school!!!

  • VOLUNTEERING – We have School Site Council (SSC) parent positions open and the commitment is four times a year!!!

  • PTA – Do you have PTA experience from Elementary, Middle, or High School?  If so, WE NEED YOU!!!  Due to the nature of independent study, it is extremely difficult to start and maintain a school PTA…but, we would like to try!  Please see me for more information!!!
